New Orleans had become a city of iniquity. The vice of men sparked a cultivation of the oldest profession in the world and it waxed into every neighborhood. Night after night the red lights glowed; veritable beacons heralding the naked truths the city scrambled to subdue into the shadows. The city was under a siege of immorality: prostitution, gambling and drinking collectively known as “sport” (3).
